Cause 1: the watch is not actually connected
The Connect IQ app happily lets you tap Install while the watch is out of reach, asleep, or connected to another phone. The install then waits in a queue you cannot see. Open Garmin Connect, wait until your watch shows as connected (the sync icon settles), then return to Connect IQ. Most "stuck" installs finish the moment the link is real.
Cause 2: something needs a restart
The Bluetooth stack between phone and watch degrades quietly, especially after OS updates. Restart the watch (hold the power button, Power Off, start again) and the phone, then retry. It is unglamorous and it clears more install failures than everything else combined.
Cause 3: the watch is full
Watches have a limited budget for Connect IQ content, and older models fit fewer items than newer ones. When the budget is spent, new installs fail or hang without a clear message. In the Connect IQ app open your device's installed list and remove faces, data fields and apps you no longer use (on the watch: Settings, then Apps, on most models). Then install again. Faces you paid for can be removed freely; your license stays on your account and reinstalling later is free.
Cause 4: stale software
An outdated Connect IQ app or watch firmware can refuse content built with a newer toolchain. Update the Connect IQ app in your phone's app store, update the watch in Garmin Connect (System, then Software Update, or just let a sync offer it), then retry the install.
Cause 5: a stuck queue item
If one install jammed, everything behind it waits forever. In the Connect IQ app, open your device's install queue or installed list, remove the jammed item, sync, and start the install fresh. Combined with a restart this clears the stubborn tail of cases.
When it is not fixable from your side
Two cases are out of your hands. First, incompatibility: the store only offers a face to models its developer enabled, so a face that does not list your watch cannot be installed, full stop; ask the developer or pick another. Second, a face that installs and then crashes with the IQ! triangle is a different problem with a different fix, covered in our IQ! error guide. And if you tried the whole checklist and a compatible face still will not land, the desktop route through Garmin Express over USB bypasses the phone entirely and doubles as a diagnosis: if USB works, the problem lives in the phone's Bluetooth pairing, and re-pairing the watch in Garmin Connect fixes it.
