Two philosophies of a screen

An AMOLED panel makes its own light, one tiny diode per pixel. Colors are vivid, blacks are truly black (the pixel is just off), and indoors or at night it looks like a phone on your wrist. A MIP panel, memory-in-pixel, does the opposite: it holds its image with almost no power and reflects the light around you, the way a paper page does. Point it at the sun and it gets clearer, not dimmer.

That single difference, emit versus reflect, drives everything else, and it is why a Fenix 8 (AMOLED) and a Fenix 7 (MIP) feel like different watches despite sharing a lineage.

What it means for watch faces

This is where we live. A face is not one design that scales; it is two, because a color that reads beautifully on AMOLED can turn to grey mud on MIP’s reflective, limited palette. Build only for AMOLED and your MIP owners get something washed out, or nothing at all. So we tune every color and layout separately for each display group and verify both before shipping. It is why, on our per-model pages, some faces note a dedicated MIP palette and a couple (like the color-heavy Tifo) are AMOLED-only by honest necessity.

So which should you buy?

Be honest about where you look at your watch. If it is mostly indoors, at a desk, in the evening, and you want it to look gorgeous, AMOLED. If you are outside for hours, chasing multi-week battery, or you simply never want to think about charging, MIP. Garmin’s refusal to pick one is a feature: the Fenix 8 even ships both, AMOLED on the standard models and MIP on the Solar editions. Whichever you choose, a face built properly for that screen is what makes it feel finished, and that part is on us.

Which is better, AMOLED or MIP?
Neither, and that is the point. AMOLED is better indoors, at night and for color; MIP is better in bright sun and for battery. Garmin keeps both because different people genuinely want different things.
Can a MIP watch show the same watch faces as an AMOLED one?
Only if the developer built for MIP. A face designed for AMOLED can look washed out or be unavailable on MIP, because MIP shows far fewer colors and reflects light instead of emitting it. Our faces ship separate MIP rendering so they look right on both.
Does AMOLED burn in on a Garmin?
It can over years of a static image, which is why AMOLED Garmins run a dark background and move or dim the always-on layer. Sensible faces respect those rules, so in practice burn-in is rare.
