Your Garmin watch face changed by itself: causes and the way back
Waking up to a different watch face feels like the watch made a decision without you. It did, and it had one of four reasons. All are quick to undo once you know which one fired.

Cause 1: battery saver swapped it
When the battery hits the saver threshold (or you enable battery saver manually), most
Garmin models switch to a stripped-down low-power face as part of the savings. This is
the most common "it changed overnight" story: the watch ran low while you slept. Charge
it or turn battery saver off, and your face returns.
Cause 2: an update restarted the watch
Firmware updates occasionally come back up on a default face, especially bigger ones.
Nothing is lost; your face is still installed. Reselect it from the carousel and carry on.
Cause 3: the face crashed
A Connect IQ face that hits an error gets replaced by the system: either with the
IQ! triangle or, on some models, silently with a built-in face. If your watch
shows IQ!, or if the swap keeps happening to the same third-party face, work through the
IQ! error guide: restart, update,
reinstall, and report your exact model to the developer if it persists.
Cause 4: an accidental long press
The face switcher is one long press away by design, and sleeves, gym racks and toddlers
all know it. If the watch shows a neighboring face from your carousel and everything else
is normal, this is all it was.
Getting your face back
Hold UP (button models) or hold the touchscreen to open the carousel.
Scroll to your face and apply it. Settings are preserved; faces remember their configuration.
If the face is not in the carousel, open the Connect IQ app on your phone and reinstall it from the store.

Then it was uninstalled, most often during a failed sync or a storage cleanup. Reinstall it from the Connect IQ store; if it was paid, the license is on your account and reinstalling is free. Your settings usually need setting up again.
Does battery saver always replace my watch face?
On most models yes, that is its main trick: a minimal low-power face costs less energy. Your own face comes back when battery saver turns off. If the swap annoys you, disable the automatic battery saver threshold in the watch power settings.
Can I stop it from ever changing by itself?
Mostly: keep the watch charged so battery saver never triggers, and keep the face and firmware updated so crashes stay rare. There is no setting that pins a face permanently; the reverts above are the watch protecting itself.
