It starts with the screen
The single biggest reason is the display. Many Garmins use a MIP screen that
reflects ambient light and holds its image with almost no power, so keeping it on all day is
essentially free. The AMOLED Garmins spend more, which is exactly why they default to a dark
face and offer always-on display as a choice rather than a given. Your phone’s bright, always-lit
panel is the opposite approach, and it shows up on the charger every night.
A chip that does less, on purpose
A Garmin is not trying to run a browser. Its processor is tuned for one job, tracking you
efficiently, and it idles in very low-power states between the things it actually needs to do.
Fewer background apps, no constant app-store machinery, less radio chatter. Boring, and the
reason the numbers are measured in weeks.
Where the watch face comes in
People assume the face is the villain. It usually is not. A properly built face wakes up, draws
once, and goes back to sleep, about once a minute. The costs that matter are the ones that make
the screen work harder or more often: always-on display keeping pixels lit, and
live seconds forcing a redraw every second instead of every minute. Turn those

All of this is a trade: Garmin spends its battery on lasting, your phone-watch spends it on
looking and doing. Neither is wrong. But it is why the honest move, if weeks of battery is the
reason you own a Garmin, is to enjoy a good-looking face in gesture mode and reach for always-on
only when you truly want it. The watch was built to go long; a well-made face lets it.
